Conservation of energy – Sam Perelman Purpose: To investigate the gravitational potential energy, kinetic energy, and mechanical energy of the cart as it goes down the ramp. Hypothesis If energy is conserved then the cart will have the highest gravitational potential energy at the top of the ramp and the highest kinetic energy at the bottom of the ramp but have a consistent total energy throughout its journey. This is because the equation for Eg is Eg =mgh so when h=0 E=0 (this occurs at the bottom of the ramp). The equation for Ek however is Ek=(1/2)m(v2) so when v=0, E=0 (top of the ramp). This means that as the cart rolls down it begins losing Eg and gaining Ek which keeps Em at a constant. Materials - Wooden plank - GLX Graphing Device - 3 Textbooks - Meter Stick - Laboratory Cart Procedure 1. End of wooden plank was propped up with textbooks. Meter stick was used to measure the length and height of ramp. 2. Motion sensor was placed at the top of the ramp facing the bottom. Cart was let go from a position near the top of the ramp. Position-Time graph was obtained as the cart rolled down and away from sensor. 3. One point near the end of the run was selected as the final position (Δd2) and as the reference (h=0 at reference). 4. The following equation was used: h= Δd(H/L) to find the height of the cart at any position above the reference. 5. Speed was determined using the GLX graph tools section. 6.
