Family: Television and Shooting Dad Essay

Family, they are there for you no matter what. They love you no matter what your views, but is there anything that is more important then family? In the two essays ; Shooting Dad and TV: The Plug-In Drug, both show what being a family is like for different people. Each essay shows pathos, ethos, and cause and effect in both different and similar ways. TV: The Plug-In Drug, by Marie Winn, is about televisions â€Å"taking over† quality family time. Winn uses pathos by talking to different types of people who come from different types of families; this way you get to hear from other people how the television is taking away from precious memory making. Trying to touch each of our emotional sides, although you might not start crying, Winn is able to talk to people and get information about families and the time they spend with each other versus the time in front of the television. Hear what this woman had to say about the television: â€Å"We were in the midst of a full-scale War. Every day was a new battle and every program was major skirmish†¦We have agreed on 2? hours of TV a day (with dinner gobbled up in between) and two half-hour shows between 7 and 8:30 which enables the grown-ups to eat in peace†¦Ã¢â‚¬  How many of us actually do this? Just like in Shooting Dad, by Sarah Vowell, average people try to use something else to cover up the feelings they have about something. Although Vowell shows a more clear side to pathos she does not get into as much detail, nor is her essay based on facts, which people tend to believe or rely on more then stories. Vowell uses a childhood story to explain to us how never giving interest to something can lead to being over-looked by the people you care about. One line in this essay that shows a lot of emotion is: â€Å"My dad says that when he dies he wants my mom, sister, and me to drag the cannon to the top of the Gravellies on opening day of hunting season. Looking off at Sphinx Mountain put his ashes in a little paper bag, then place the bag in the cannon. Aim the cannon high into the sky, making sure he does not take anyone else with him, just so he can take his last hunting trip on opening morning. Not only would this be hard for the family to hear their father say, it would also be hard to accomplish. This is very emotional and to some of us it is also quite personal. When it comes to being personal, Winn has an amazing way of sharing each comment with us. The one that touched me the most was from a woman who lived not far from here in Chicago, she said: â€Å"As a child I had millions of relatives around- my parents both come from relatively large families. My father had nine brothers and sister. And so every holiday there was this great swoop-down of aunts, uncles, and millions of cousins. I just remember how wonderful it used to be. The cousins would come and everyone would play and ultimately, after dinner, all the women would be in the front of the house, drinking coffee and talking, all the men would be in the back of the house, drinking and smoking, and all the kids would be all over the place, playing hide and seek. Christmas time was particularly nice because everyone always brought all their toys and games. Our house had a couple of rooms with go-through closets, so there were always kids running in a great circle route. I remember it was just wonderful. And then all the sudden one year I remember becoming suddenly aware of how different everything had become. The kids were no longer playing Monopoly or Clue or the other games we used to play together. It was because we had a television set which had been turned on for a football fame. All of that socializing that had gone on preciously had ended. Now everyone was sitting in front of the television set, on a holiday, at a family party! I remember being stunned by how awful that was. Somehow the television had become more attractive. † Do you remember those Christmases? Not until I read this essay did I clearly understand how the television is overpowering the family time we spend together now. The way Winn is able to use a story that anyone can relate to is so awesome and it makes the essay even more personal. Shooting Dad on the other hand is not people’s comments or stories, it is like the authors biography. Shooting Dad tells about Vowell and her father, how they fight all the time and rarely agree on anything. The reason I find this part so personal is my dad and I disagree on a lot and rarely agree on anything just like in the story. Sarah Vowell is able to take a personal story and easily make the reader feel like they are in her shoes. While both TV: The Plug-In Drug and Shooting Dad show pathos and ethos in similar and different ways, each one shows cause and effect the same. TV: The Plug-In Drug shows that is you watch television all the time you have no time for family. It also shows that television can take away from something or someone really special. Shooting Dad shows a similar scene although it has nothing to do with a television it still shows how something can â€Å"get in the way† of being a family. The father in this story is all about ammunition, but the daughter could care less; she would rather read a book or make a science project. When the daughter showed interest in her fathers completion of a cannon, she was amazed and they went out together to shoot it. Never would this have happened if the daughter did not try. Shooting Dad and TV: The Plug-In Drug both tell a story that liking something so unimportant so much that is takes away from what really matters. Shooting Dad and TV: The Plug-In Drug are two similar stories, told in different ways. Vowell, author of Shooting Dad, tries to use more of a personal story to help the reader better understand how average Americans let insignificant things get in the way of a family. TV: The Plug-In Drug on the other hand uses facts and opinion both to help the reader. In using other people’s opinions, the author, Marie Winn, is able to take different stories and create a story of her own that expresses everything and more about a television overpowering a families time spent together. So what matters to you? Is it your television, latest invention, new CD, what means so much to you that your family cannot come first? If you say â€Å"family means more to me than anything† or â€Å" my family always comes first,† remember the last time you were watching television or reading a book and someone called you name. Your response was probably, â€Å" Hang on just a minute, wait until the commercial comes on,† like the average American, we all tend to put something off and tell the person bugging us during our favorite television show to wait, like what they had to say was not important. Before you finish reading this essay, I am going to ask you one more time: Is there anything more important than family?

Exxon Mobil: Stakeholders Theory What should be the role adopted by the Government to discourage profiteering by large organizations? ExxonMobil is an American oil and gas corporation and a direct descendant of John D. Rockerfeller’s Standard Oil Company. The mereger of Exxon and Mobil on Novermber 30, 1999 led to the formation of ExxonMobil which is the worlds largest company by revenue. ExxonMobil operate facilities or market products in most of the world’s countries and explore for oil and natural gas on six continents. The case: ExxonMobil has drawn criticism from the environmental lobby for funding organizations critical of the Kyoto Protocol and skeptical of the scientific opinion that global warming is caused by the burning of fossil fuels. According to The Guardian, ExxonMobil has funded, among other groups skeptical of global warming, the Competitive Enterprise Institute, George C. Marshall Institute, Heartland Institute, Congress on Racial Equality, TechCentralStation. com, and International Policy Network. ExxonMobil's support for these organizations has drawn criticism from the Royal Society, the academy of sciences of the United Kingdom. The Union of Concerned Scientists released a report in 2007 accusing ExxonMobil of spending $16 million, between 1998 and 2005, towards 43 advocacy organizations which dispute the impact of global warming. The report argued that ExxonMobil used disinformation tactics similar to those used by the tobacco industry in its denials of the link between lung cancer and smoking, saying that the company used â€Å"many of the same organizations and personnel to cloud the scientific understanding of climate change and delay action on the issue. ExxonMobil has been reported as having plans to invest up to US$100m over a ten year period in Stanford University's Global Climate and Energy Project. In August 2006, the Wall Street Journal revealed that a YouTube video lampooning Al Gore, titled Al Gore's Penguin Army, appeared to be astroturfing by DCI Group, a Washington PR firm with ties to ExxonMobil. The recent scenario: In January 2007, the company appeared to change its position, when vice pr esident for public affairs Kenneth Cohen said â€Å"we know enough now—or, society knows enough now—that the risk is serious and action should be taken. Cohen stated that, as of 2006, ExxonMobil had ceased funding of the Competitive Enterprise Institute and â€Å"‘five or six' similar groups†. While the company did not publicly state which the other similar groups were, a May 2007 report by Greenpeace does list the five groups it stopped funding as well as a list of 41 other climate skeptic groups which are still receiving ExxonMobil funds. On February 13, 2007, ExxonMobil CEO Rex W. Tillerson acknowledged that the planet was warming while carbon dioxide levels were increasing, but in the same speech gave an unqualified defense of the oil industry and predicted that hydrocarbons would dominate the world’s transportation as energy demand grows by an expected 40 percent by 2030. Tillerson stated that there is no significant alternative to oil in coming decades, and that ExxonMobil would continue to make petroleum and natural gas its primary products. A survey carried out by the UK's Royal Society found that in 2005 ExxonMobil distributed $2. m to 39 groups that the society said â€Å"misrepresented the science of climate change by outright denial of the evidence†. On July 1, 2009, the Guardian newspaper revealed that ExxonMobil has continued to fund organizations including the National Center for Policy Analysis (NCPA) along with the Heritage Foundation, despite a public pledge to cut support of lobby groups who deny climate change. ExxonMobil's envir onmental record has been a target of critics from outside organizations such as Greenpeace as well as some institutional investors who disagree with its stance on global warming. The Political Economy Research Institute ranks ExxonMobil sixth among corporations emitting airborne pollutants in the United States. The ranking is based on the quantity (15. 5 million pounds in 2005) and toxicity of the emissions. In 2005, ExxonMobil had committed less than 1% of their profits towards researching alternative energy, less than other leading oil companies. Stakeholder: Stakeholders are entities who are directly or indirectly associated with any organisation. Any decision made by the organisation , good or bad is bound to have some effect on all of these. Stakeholders are either internal to the organisation or they may be external to the organisation. Internal stakeholders are employees, trade unions, customers , suppliers, competitors. External stakeholders are shareholders , government authorities, regulators, NGOs, pressure grps etc . But recently,it has been a contributor to environmental causes as the company donated $6. 6 million to environmental and social groups in 2007. Stakeholders of ExxonMobil: [pic] Customers: The environment at large suffered due to ExxonMobil’s unethical methods. The company was openly disdainful of the theory that fossil fuels were a major contributor to global warming. The company states that, â€Å"It is our long-standing policy to conduct business in a manner that considers both the environmental and economic needs of the communities in which we operate. We seek to drive incidents with environmental impact to zero, and to operate in a manner that is not harmful to the environment. † But we can conclude that the company isn’t practicing what it says. The company used same methods employed by tobacco companies and hence like the former harmed the environment and the community at large in order to earn maximum profit. Shareholders: The shareholders are the owners of the company and thus have to bare the brunt as well. The shareholders were pressurizing the company to invest more in alternative fuels but the company rejected the idea and hence the shareholders had to face the criticism that the company faced as well due to the company’s use of unethical practices in order to maximize its profit. Special interest groups: The groups which partenered with ExxonMobil (43 gropus) received a lot of criticism from various other groups for misrepresenting their work and aiding in the ruining of the environment by publishing articles that questioned global warming theories. For eg: Sallie Baliunas, an astrophysicist based at Stanford University Hoover Institution (it received 300. 000 USD from the company since 1998) stated in her study that temperatures haven’t changed since significantly over the past millennia and this article was rebutted by no less than 13 other scientists. They said such institutions or people mis-represent or cherry-pick the facts in an attempt to mislead the media an the people. Thus the integrity of such organizations is questioned in the future and the media and people become wary of other studies by other organizations due to a handful of these institutions which aide in misleading the society at large. Competitors: The competitors of ExxonMobil such as Shell and BP followed the Koyoto protocol and dropped out of Global Climate Coalition, an industry group which questioned the Global warming theory. The company faced further criticism cause of its unethical practices and ignorance over such environmental issues and this aided the competitors which received positive reviews from the media in 1998. The role Government can play: The small but effective amount of money invested by the company allowed to fuel doubt over global warming to delay Government action just as Big Tobacco did for over 40 years. Some of the people from the tobacco industries are said to have helped the oil giant in its unethical practices. The government should be more alert and form rules and regulations against such malpractices. Lawmakers who support reduction and limitation of green house gases emissions should be given more authority and stern action should be taken against companies such as ExxonMobil for spreading false information and hence playing havoc with the environment. ExxonMobil has been criticized by major environmental advocacy groups. In 2003, Greenpeace listed Exxon as #1 Climate Criminal. Exxon's alleged crimes include the sabotage of efforts to deal with climate change, the fraudulent manipulation of peer reviewed scientific studies and organizations, misleading and outright lying to the population of the USA, its government officials and the global community in general. The company donated a large sum of money towards environmental issues in 2007 but it will take more than that to uplift the image of the company in the eyes of the environmentalists and the population. How would have Jesus reacted to one of the conflicts in the story? Gone With the Wind Gone with the wind is one of best novel I have ever read. It is also the greatest love story ever written. It is set during the American civil war (1861) in which the Southern states (the Confederacy) tried to free themselves from the northern states. The main character of this story was the beautiful Scarlett O’Hara. Her father, Gerald O’Hara was an old Irishman who owned a big cotton plantation named Tara. He also owned tens of slaves who worked for him. Scarlett’s mother was Ellen O’Hara and she was one of the kindest and most respected ladies in the county. All her life, Scarlett O’Hara wanted to be like her mother Ellen. The main O’Haras neighbors included the Wilkeses, the Tarletons, and the Calverts. As she was the most beautiful girl in the whole county, she had many beaux compared to any girl in the county. Almost all the boys were in the county were in love with her. But the Tarleton twins, Brent and Stuart, whom Scarlett liked hanging out with were twice madly in love with her compared to any other boys. But the problem was that Scarlett didn’t love them. She  was madly in love with Ashley Wilkes, her neighbor. She believed that Ashley Wilkes and her were meant to be together and neither the coming civil war nor the Tarleton twins were going to change that. But then, Scarlett learnt from the twins that the love of her life Ashley was going to marry his cousin Melanie Hamilton. She could hardly believe this and depression suddenly took the better part of her. Luckily, the Wilkeses organized a barbecue in which they were going to announce Ashley Wilkes engagement to his cousin. Scarlett planned to tell Ashley that she loved him and he would propose to her and forget about his cousin Melanie. and then maybe they would elope. But at the Wilkes’ barbecue, her plan didn’t succeed. Ashley told her that he loved his cousin Melanie because they were alike blood wise and they were alike in many other ways. Now, since they didn’t want to be heard by others as they were having their secret talk they decided to do it in the library. Unfortunately after they had finished their talk and Ashley had left the library, Scarlett started crying. Then from the back of the library, a man appeared, with an evil smile on his face. Scarlett knew that he had been listening to their conversation. His name was Rhett Butler and Scarlett told him that he was no gentleman and she was surprised to hear that she was no lady. To make Ashley Wilkes feel jealous, Scarlett married the timid and shy Charles Hamilton who was Melanie brother. Every boy who was in love with Scarlett was furious and even the Tarletons twins swore to kill Charles. Then the war started, and before all the men went to the war, Scarlett married Charles and Melanie married Ashley on the same wedding and day. Within two weeks of her marriage, Scarlett was already a widow as Charles Hamilton died in the war due pneumonia. But this didn’t worry Scarlett as she didn’t love Charles. But she was sad as Ashley had married another chick and he had gone with her. So everybody confused this, and thought that she was mourning for her husband’s death Charles. Scarlett left her home Tara to Atlanta as her parents thought that a change  of scene would reduce her stress and depression. She was happy because she moving to the Hamilton house where Melanie used to live and also, the half of the house was hers. Through Melanie maybe she would learn how Ashley was doing through the mail he sent to her. For a second time, Scarlett met Rhett Butler who was by now a blockader, as the Yankees were not allowing the Confederates to trade with other countries with nations through the Eastern United States port search New York. Gone with the wind, is a rather big book and hence hard to summarize, but this is what happened next briefly. The Yankees took over Atlanta and Scarlett had to go back to Tara. Then after the Yankees had taken over the south, the former confederate had to pay high taxes for their homes. Scarlett didn’t want to lose Tara she didn’t have the money to pay the taxes. To get the money, she married Frank Kennedy, her sister beau and got the money. But then, Frank died in KKK and Scarlett was left a widow again. Scarlett was tired of waiting for Ashley’s love, so she married Rhett Butler who loved her so much although he didn’t tell her. But she didn’t love him. Then, Melanie Wilkes, died during childbirth and Scarlett thought that she had a shot her love Ashley. She was surprised to know that Ashley didn’t love her but only loved his wife Melanie who now dead. She was so sad and it didn’t take her long to figure out that the only person who ever loved her was Rhett Butler. But when she went to him, she was surprised to know that he was tired of waiting for her love and also he had just lost his beloved daughter Bonnie whom he had substituted with Scarlett as the most important thing in his heart. So there was Scarlett. All life she had loved a man whom didn’t love her. She had loved Ashley Wilkes, and thrice she destroyed her marriages for his sakes, all in the name of love. A love that didn’t exist, a love that she created herself and never got t enjoy her creation not even a bit, what a waste it was. Margaret Mitchel was a genius author and I was so sorry when I read gone with the wind for the second time, I will never be able to read it for as the second time, only a third, maybe. 2. Gone with the wind is rather a large and complex book with different character that is worth identifying and naming. But the main characters that I mostly identify are Scarlett O’Hara the beautiful, cunning, crafty and the farsighted, Rhett Butler the arrogant and the wealthy. Also Melanie and Ashley were wildly mentioned in the story but not as much as Scarlett and Rhett Butler . 2b. I identify most with Scarlett O’ Hara and Rhett Butler as they have something I believe I have. Both Scarlett are hard workers. They both make ends meet to achieve what they want. Also to, they both don’t cares, which I find fascinating, because sometimes, I feel like the biggest don’t care in the world. You might not understand what I am talking about, here is a look of both the characters from the book. vScarlett O’Hara: ‘you miss, are no lady) said Rhett Butler to Scarlett. (Pg. 122) ‘I am a monster of selfishness’ said Scarlett O’Hara. (Pg. 584). She is the main character overall. Almost every beau in the county is in love with her at the beginning and every girl hate her for that Although she is madly in love with Ashley Wilkes who doesn’t really lover her, she marries Charles Hamilton just to make Ashley Wilkes feel jealous. She then becomes a widow within two weeks after Charles is killed in the war (pg129). Being a widow doesn’t mean she a mourner because she didn’t really love Charles. All she cares about is the love of her life Ashley Wilkes. Scarlett faces major difficulties when the Yankees make their way to Atlanta and she has to escape back to her farm Tara. With only one horse, and a mechanically bogus carriage and three children, sick Melanie and herself, she travels ten of miles until she riches Tara. (pg. 383) at Tara she finds that her heroic mother figure is dead and her father has gone crazy. Other struggles of Scarlett include when the Yankees tries to kick her family out of Tara due to unpaid tax and she had to leave for Atlanta to look for money from the rich Rhett Butler only to find that he is in prison. She secretly schemes to cheat and marry her sister Suellen beaux, Frank Kennedy, so that she can get the tax money from him. She succeeds and becomes Mrs. Kennedy. She really bullies Frank Kennedy and make him look less than man especially when she buy and starts managing the sawmills. Fortunately for her, Frank is shot  during a KKK meeting. After being widow for a while, she marries Rhett Butler who loved her so much and gave anything that he wanted. But the only problem is, she couldn’t love him because she was still in love with Ashley Wilkes. By the time she realizes Ashley couldn’t love her, and that she was in love with Rhett Butler, it was too late because Rhett was tired of waiting for her love and he had just lost his most favorite daughter. Her favorite phrase was ‘God Nightgown’ vRhett Butler: ‘You are no gentleman† said Scarlett to Rhett. (pg.122). Nobody including his family could receive Rhett Butler to their homes before the civil war. He was an outcast in his hometown Charleston because he disgraced a girl and refused to marry. But the thing was, Rhett Butler didn’t care what other thought of him. Other people’s opinion didn’t move him. When he saw Scarlett at the Wilkes’ barbecue, he instantly fell in love with her and told himself the day he was going to marry her it would be his lucky day. During the civil war, the Yankees did not allow the Confederacy to trade with the Europeans or any other part of the world through the port of New York City. It was know as the famous Blockade. Then Rhett Butler a wise and corrupted man; made a pact with the Yankees, in that they would sell him goods of all kind. He then go to the confederate, tell them how hard it was to run the blockade, which he actually didn’t and sell his goods to them at double price. The somehow people found out it. 3. Gone with the wind would not have been such a big success if it weren’t set during the American civil war. Don’t get me wrong here. I am not trying to imply that the book is a historical record of the civil war. It is a love story. At the before the civil war, we meet Stuart and Brent Tarleton who are both madly in love with Scarlett and who believe that one of them is going to marry her (pg. 4). We also meet Ashley Wilkes who is planning to marry his cousin Melanie Wilkes. The O’Hara sisters, Suellen who is in love with Frank Kennedy, Careen who is in love with Brent Tarleton who by the way is in love with Scarlett. There many other young people that I will not mention who had sweet hearts and were planning to get married. Then came the news that the war was going to start with a few days and that all the young men available were to leave and join the army. This meant the young  sweethearts were either to get married before the men left for the war or there could wait until the war was over. Well some couple got married other decided to wait. The example I have in mind is when Scarlett O’Hara married Charles Hamilton but when Charles left for the war, he died within less than two weeks. (Pg. 129) If Charles happened to live, then we would have no story because Scarlett wouldn’t have the freedom to marry other men, which she did and made the story deserve to be read at a sitting. The setting made the story more real, entertaining and worth reading. It was a love story because young girls got to lose their sweethearts in the war and then the author would show us how they got to survive, get other lovers and so on. if the story was set on other setting such as the modern times, let say the year 2003 instead of 1861-5, it wouldn’t be such a successful love story because nothing of much significant has happened that affects young sweethearts apart from STDs which don’t mostly affect true and faithful lovers. If the story were set maybe in the middle ages or the renaissance, it would have been quite a boring book to read. Most people don’t want to read how the plague affected young lovers, and there wasn’t romantic love didn’t exists as wildly as it did in the 19th century. But on the other it would be a more interesting love story if it was set during the time of chivalry and brave knights and so on. Sir Walter Scott’s Ivanhoe was a huge success as a romantic story and so was the Alexander Dumas’s The three Musketeer set during 1665 during the reign of Louis the just or the 8th. But none can, or is near the Margaret Mitchel Gone with the wind! What a pity. 4. This is a huge book with almost tens of conflicts and I shall try to get the major conflicts. vThey is an inner conflict between the Tarletons twins, as they are both deeply in love with Scarlett, but they are not sure among them whom she is going to choose among them, then they are surprised out of their wits when she chooses the timid and shy Charles Hamilton vThere is a general conflict between the union and the Confederacy as the Union refuses to recognize it as a free state. This leads to the civil war, which is the general setting of the great novel. vAshley has an inner conflict whether he loves Scarlett or not which leads to the biggest conflict in the book which is: vThere are other smaller conflicts, which I would take hours and tens of pages to name and analyze, so I will just, move to the major conflict. vScarlett is madly in love with Ashley Wilkes who finds it difficult to make it clear to her that he is only in love with his cousin Melanie and is only attracted to Scarlett because of her beauty (pg.118). This end up causing much problem to Scarlett because she end up marrying men she didn’t love. Married Frank Kennedy just to save Tara form being taken away by the Yankees because of the taxes, where by the way Ashley and his family were taking refuge. She also marries Rhett Butler whom she didn’t love because she was tired of waiting for Ashley’s love. And then, Ashley’s wife Melanie dies during childbirth and Scarlett know that she has her chance to marry love of her life, but she gets the surprise of her lifetime, v†Ã¢â‚¬ËœWhat you have gone through†¦Oh Ashley, you should have known, years ago, that you loved her and not me! Why didn’t you! Everything would have been so different, so-Oh you should have and not kept me dangling with all your talk about honor and sacrifice! If you told me long me, years ago, I’d have–It would have killed me but I would have it somehow. This monetary policy is the subject of debate of IMF, the World bank, the government ,and other financing bodies. However, despite its robust economy, its GDP per capita income has remained relatively low as compared to United States. China’s GDP per capita is $4,428 while US has $47,153.(The World Bank) In effect, China is not subsidizing US economy because both countries benefit from the deal. The proceeds of the US debts are spent on federal programs while payments of interests of loan is spent by China to propel its economic growth. US debts also kept interest rates low. It is threatening because by holding too much ownership of U.S debts, China can use it as an economic weapon and shift the economic balance in its favor. Being second greatest in the world’s economy, China can use this power as leverage for imposing demands. China has been reported to feel uneasy about relying on the dollar to store its reserves. It has also pressed for changes to give developing countries more influence on the IMF, the World Bank and other financing institutions. G-20 is a group of finance ministers and central bank governors from 20 economies and was formed to discuss the international financial system. To date, there is no report on the success of this proposition. What is its impact to the U.S. economy? The reduction of China’s demand for dollars leads to a domino effect – increase of interest rates that would hamper revival of the economy.
